10 cc/ml liquid fungi mycology culture syringe with a sterile needle.
The Amadou mushroom, scientifically known as Fomes fomentarius, is a unique and fascinating fungus widely recognized for its distinctive hoof-like shape and medicinal properties. Often called the “tinder fungus,” or "hoof fungus," it has been used for centuries across various cultures. This mushroom grows on dead or decaying hardwood trees, like birch, beech, and oak, typically in colder climates such as northern Europe, North America, and Asia.
The Amadou mushroom can be used to make a leather-like material. It grows on decayed trees, especially beech and birch, and has a tough, fibrous structure, which makes it ideal for crafting durable materials. It has been traditionally processed into a material called "amadou leather." When prepared, this leather-like material has a soft, suede texture and can be used to make hats, bags, wallets, and other accessories. Recently, amadou has gained attention as an eco-friendly alternative to animal leather, given its sustainability and unique aesthetic qualities.
The mushroom was famously used by Ötzi the Iceman, a 5,300-year-old mummy. Among his personal items, Ötzi carried pieces of Fomes fomentarius, indicating that he likely used it as tinder for fire-starting. This fungus has unique properties that made it ideal for survival in harsh environments and essential for Ötzi's daily life. Some historians speculate that Ötzi may have used it not just for fire but also for treating wounds or infections.
